Laptop stand/dock

By Dan Nixon on 2013-01-05

My desk at uni is too small for my three monitors plus my laptop, hence I made a stand which allows me to use my laptop on my largest monitor and switch my mouse and keyboard (and other USB devices of my choosing) between my desktop and laptop.

Right now I have the laptop stand finished and am just waiting for parts and a PCB to be produced for the USB switch, this simple switched the two data lines of USB from the USB hub that connects my mouse and keyboard to either my laptop or desktop, this can be either manually switched or switches to the laptop automatically when it detects a laptop is docked (using 5V power from USB port), the switch can either be USB powered but also has power in and out for use with powered hubs.

The dock has connections for HDMI, ethernet and USB, which luckily are right next to each other on my laptop.

The cut out to the left is for cooling, this is the output of the fan, also note the ethernet connector has it's clip snapped off, I want to be able to take the laptop out as well.
