ITEAD stuff and BubbleCopter

By Dan Nixon on 2014-06-05

Over the past year I have seen myself buying more and more parts from ITEAD since they offer many parts and modules equivalent to the likes of Adafruit, etc. at a fraction of the price. Particularly their range of clone Arduinos which tend to be my “go to” board now since they have both male and female pin headers, nicer 4 pin headers for serial and i2c with ground and power and can be switched between 3.3v and 5v.

In fact I am using one such board in the transmitter for BubbleCopter (in this case a MEGA clone), the only issue I have with this is that the lower 2 pin wide header is not pin compatible with the official Arduino MEGA and is labelled with the Atmega pin names rather than Arduino pin numbers (which is either good or bad depending on who you ask). Anyway I managed to get a fairly accurate Arduino based pin map done for it here.

ITEAD also do some very cheap displays, I mainly use their character and graphic LCDs, particularly this graphic LCD which is also used in BubbleCopter and is replacing a much less effective LCD which was very difficult to see in direct sunlight.

One thing to note about this display (which I’m probably saying for my own benefit for when I use one in my next project) is that they work very well with the KS0108 driver in U8Glib and require V0 to be driven between 5V and -5V (provided on pin 17 from the onboard DC-DC converter).

Anyway, the transmitter and receiver pair for BubbleCopter should be done now so I can get back to working on the flight controller.
